A B S T R A C T A system is provided for the surgical removal of biological material. The system includes a laser energy source operating with an output wavelength in the range of 1.4-2.2 micrometers, an optical fiber with an optical device for directing the output of the laser source to the proximal end of said optical fiber. A further device is attached to the distal end of the optical fiber for directing laser energy propagating down said fiber to a surgical site.
