ABSTRACT INFRARED OPTICAL SYSTEM A forward looking infrared optical system comprises a refractor telescope in combination with a powered window and fold mirror arrangement. The arrangement comprises a powered window element with concentric spherical refractive surfaces having their common centre of curvature on the common optical axis where the latter is folded by the reflective surface of the mirror element. Because the window element is powered it introduces significant spherical aberration and some colour aberration to the system. However, the telescope provides compensation for such aberrations by being non-afocal and non-diffraction limited. This is achieved by the objective system of the telescope being telephoto and formed of first and second elements of which the first element is positively powered and the second element is negatively powered and colour corrective. The refractive surfaces of the second element are each spherical whereas at least one refractive surface of the first element is aspheric. The second element is made of a material having a lower refractive index than that of the first element.
