An infusion or transfusion needle assembly is described, at least comprising a hollow needle (4) fixed in a needle holder (8; 17), which needle holder is or can be connected to a connecting hose (6). The needle holder (8; 17) is slidable accommodated in a sheath (2; 15, 16), and locking means are present between the needle holder (8; 17) and the sheath (2; 15, 16), said locking means being designed in such a way that after unlocking of the needle holder (8; 17) the needle (4) can be pushed fully into the sheath (2; 15, 16) and locked therein. Preferably, the sheath is composed of at least two mutually slidable and lockable parts (15, 16) to provide a relatively short needle assembly.
