The floss is comprised of one or more strands of a tensilized polytetrafluoroethylene. The polytetrafluoroethylene is tensilized by stretching with heating to increase the tensile strength and to decrease elongation. The floss is readily grippable since it has an irregular surface. The polytetrafluoroethylene is made to have an irregular surface by having a solid incorporated into the fiber structure. The solid has a diameter of from about submicron size up to about 125 % of the thickness diameter of the fiber. The floss will have a coefficient of friction of more than about 0.08. There is an acceptable grippability without the need for a coating. In addition, the solid that is incorporated into the fiber can be a bioactive material for delivery of the bioactive material to the teeth and gums during flossing.
Le fil de cette invention est constitué d'un ou de plusieurs brins de polytétrafluoroéthylène étirés/renforcés. Pour étirer/renforcer le polytétrafluoroéthylène on l'a étiré en le chauffant pour accroître sa résistance à la rupture par traction et réduire son allongement. Le fil est facile à prendre entre les doigts étant donné sa surface irrégulière. Le polytétrafluoroéthylène est fabriqué de manière à avoir une surface irrégulière et c'est la raison pour laquelle on a incorporé un solide dans la structure de la fibre. Le solide se caractérise par un diamètre variable pouvant aller d'une taille inférieure au micron jusqu'à une taille pouvant représenter environ 125 % du diamètre de l'épaisseur de la fibre. Le fil présente un coefficient de frottement supérieur à environ 0,08. La prise entre les doigts étant suffisante il n'est pas nécessaire de prévoir un revêtement. En outre, le solide qui est incorporé dans la fibre peut être une matière bioactive destinée à être apportée aux dents et aux gencives pendant le passage du fil dentaire.
