A class of chemical compounds comprising fatty acid ester derivatives used to inhibit beta-lactamase production by infectious bacteria. These inhibitors have been found to retard the resistance of certain strains of bacteria to beta-lactam antibiotics, such as penicillin, by interfering with the transcription of the beta-lactamase gene and precluding expression of beta-lactamase. In accordance therewith, therewith, these inhibitors permit effective treatment of infections of otherwise resistive bacteria with antibiotics.
