The present invention relates to a composition for preventing and/or treating periodontal diseases. The composition comprises an effective amount of a protease inhibitor, such as a MMP inhibitor or a siderophore, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The composition may be comprised for example in a toothpaste or a mouthwash formulation. The present invention also relates to a therapeutic method for the prevention and/or treatment of periodontal diseases. The method comprises the step of contacting a protease inhibitor such as a MMP inhibitor or a siderophore with a periodontal tissue.
