The present invention is directed to preventing the nonenzymatic glycation of albumin, which generates biologically active Amadori glucose adducts in the albumin molecule, as well as methods of using compounds that protect albumin against nonenzymatic glycation to prevent vasculopathy. The present invention also is directed to preventing the nonenzymatic glycation of apolipoprotein B in low density lipoproteins, which generates Amadori glucose adducts in the apo B molecule that predispose to lipid oxidation and to LDL-cholesterol internalization leading to foam cells, as well as methods of using compounds that protect apo B/LDL against nonenzymatic glycation to prevent atherosclerosis and to reduce serum cholesterol levels.

La présente invention est destinée à prévenir la glycation non enzymatique de l'albumine, qui génère des adduits de glucose d'Amadori biologiquement actifs dans une molécule d'albumine; elle concerne aussi des méthodes d'utilisation de composés protégeant l'albumine contre la glycation non enzymatique afin de prévenir la vasculopathie. L'invention est également destinée à prévenir la glycation non enzymatique de l'apolipoprotéine B dans des lipoprotéines de faible densité, qui génère des adduits de glucose d'Amadori dans une molécule d'apolipoprotéine B, favorisant l'oxydation des lipides et l'intériorisation du cholestérol des lipoprotéines de faible densité (LDL), ce qui provoque la formation de cellules spumeuses; l'invention constitue aussi une méthode d'utilisation de composés protégeant l'apolipoprotéine B/les lipoprotéines de faible densité (LDL) contre la glycation non enzymatique pour prévenir l'athérosclérose et réduire les taux de cholestérol sérique.
