A known surface adhesin (NadA) in Neisseria meningitidis contains sequences which correspond to the fusion peptide, HR1 repeat and HR2 repeat seen in the envelope protein of viruses.Fusion inhibitors may thus be used to inhibit meningococcal infection, and the invention provides a compound that can bind to the heptad repeat sequence(s) HR1 and/or HR2 of the NadA adhesin on the surface of a meningococcus, thereby inhibiting the ability of the meningococcus either to infect a host organism or to spread an existing infection.

Une adhésine de surface connue (NadA) du Neisseria meningitidis contient des séquences qui correspondent au peptide de fusion, les séquences nucléotidiques répétées HR1 et HR2 présentes dans la protéine d'enveloppe des virus. Les inhibiteurs de fusion peuvent ainsi servir à inhiber l'infection à meningocoques. L'invention concerne en outre un composé qui est capable de se lier aux séquences nucléotidiques répétées d'heptade HR1 et/ou HR2 de l'adhésine NadA à la surface des meningocoques, de manière à inhiber la capacité des meningocoques à infecter un organisme hôte ou à propager une infection déjà existante.
