A biocompatible polyethylene oxide gel implant and method for production which can be injected into the human body for tissue replacement and augmentation. The implant is prepared by dissolving a sample of essentially pure polyethylene oxide in a saline solution in a sealed canister, removing all free oxygen from the container and replacing it with an inert gas, such as argon, and irradiating the canister with a gamma ray source to simultaneously crosslink the polyethylene oxide while sterilizing it. The gel can then be placed into a syringe and injected into the body.
L'invention concerne un implant sous forme de gel d'oxyde de polyéthylène biocompatible et son procédé de production. Ledit gel peut être injecté dans le corps humain en vue d'un remplacement ou d'une augmentation tissulaire. Le procédé de production de l'implant consiste à dissoudre un échantillon d'oxyde de polyéthylène pratiquement pur dans une solution saline, dans un récipient métallique scellé, à retirer la totalité de l'oxygène libre du récipient et à le remplacer par un gaz inerte, tel que l'argon, puis à exposer le récipient à une source de rayons gamma afin de réticuler l'oxyde de polyéthylène tout en stérilisant le gel. Ce gel peut ensuite être introduit dans une seringue et injecté dans le corps humain.
