A Method for injection locking an oscillator using sub-sampling tuning is taught herein. The tuning is accomplished by sub-sampling the Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) output. The VCO (3) output (4) is sub-sampled by an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) (5). The sub- sampled signal (6) is then processed in the digital domain using a digital circuit (7) that is used to determine the oscillation frequency (F c) of the VCO. The F c is then adjusted by generating a digital control signal (8) that can be converted to an analog signal (10) using a Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) (9). Once the VCO oscillation frequency is tuned so that the desired frequency is within the Locking Band-Width (LBW) of the VCO, the input reference frequency is turned on and the VCO is injection Locked to the input reference. This invention allows the use of a much smaller input reference when performing injection locking, thereby allowing the use of harmonics of a much lower frequency reference.
