Energy efficiency has become essential due to climbing energy costs. In the construction business, this is being accomplished through the implementation of various energy efficient and renewable technologies. These include efficient building envelopes (increased levels of wall and roof insulation, more efficient windows etc...), heat recovery ventilation (pre-conditioning of fresh air through air exchangers), higher efficiency hot water boilers and the overall substitution of fossil fuels with renewable and sustainable energy sources. In January 2006, Architecture 2030 launched the '2030 Challenge' which calls for all new buildings and major renovations to reduce their fossil-fuel greenhouse-gas- emitting energy consumption by 50 per cent immediately, increase this reduction to 60 per cent in 201, 70 percent in 2015, 80 per cent n 2020, 90 per cent in 2025, and finally, make all new buildings carbon neutral by 2030. Owners of existing buildings who do not wish to undergo major renovations of find the costs associated with integrating renewable energy sources to be prohibitive, may be seeking a system that does not require extensive and expensive infrastructure changes. This new concept, the One Pipe System delivers energy from a renewable source into a building using pre-existing infrastructure making renewable energy easily accessible and affordable. The One Pipe System (OPS) will be capable of delivering heating, cooling, domestic hot and cold water using a single pipe and return. Target users of this system include existing condominiums, multi-unit residential buildings and office towers.
