ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention provides an essentially inorganic, sintered, monolithic hollow fiber characterized by having a radially anisotropic internal void volume wall structure. Processes for the production of such fibers are also disclosed. The hollow fibers of this invention are useful in many fields, such as fluid separations, fuel cells and catalysis, and are capable of withstanding conditions to which they may be subjected during, for example, a separation operation, while providing adequate selective separation of the fluid together with a suffi- ciently high flux. The fibers overcome the disadvantage of providing separation membranes which exhibit adequately high selective separation, but undesirably low fluxes and thus requiring such large separating membrane surface area that the large scale commercial use of these membranes is not economically feasible.
