INORGANIC GELS AND ASBESTOS-FREE SHEET MATERIAL MADE THEREFROM Disclosed are inorganic gels which may be utilized to prepare high temperature resistant asbestos-free gasket mica that has a charge per structural unit that ranges from about -.6 to -1 and which contains interstitial Li+ and/or Na+ ions with a source of multivalent cations that have an ionic radius smaller than that of Li+ for a time sufficient to cause an ion exchange reaction to occur between at least some of the multivalent cations and the interstitial ions.
