The insect trap has optical, mechanical and/or olfactory attractants therein to draw flying insects and particularly blood-sucking insects thereto. The visual characteristic of the insect trap consists of a dark contrast region on the trap surface surrounded by a light-coloured background. In one embodiment, the light-coloured region is covered with insecticide to destroy the insects upon contact. In another aspect of the invention, the trap has a fan mounted thereto. The dark coloured region is an intake opening of the fan and the light-coloured region is a mesh-covered air discharge opening. The fan is operated to produce an air flow corresponding to a weak air stream such as a convection air stream rising off a human or animal body. In a third aspect of the invention, the air stream carries human or animal body odour. The trap is operated with one of the three characteristics or with all three features combined.
