A heat exchanger has a plurality of first fluid passageways, a plurality of second fluid passageways which are interposed with the plurality of first fluid passageways in heat exchange relationship therewith, and a transverse manifold passage extended across the first passageways in fluid communication therewith and substantially fluidly sealed from the second fluid passageways. An end wall has an opening in communication with one end of the transverse manifold passage, and an insert tube having an end portion in substantially fluidly sealed securement in the opening in the end wall extends along the transverse manifold passage. A fitting in substantially fluidly sealed securement on an outer face of the end wall has a fluid inlet opening in communication with the opening in the end wall, and a portion of the end wall surrounding the opening therein is outwardly directed in engagement within the fluid inlet opening in the fitting. The above-mentioned end portion of the insert tube has an axially compressively formed, outwardly projecting flange in abutting contact with an inner face of the end wall and a swaged free end in locking engagement with the outwardly directed portion of the end wall.
