The invention relates to an insertion device for an infusion set (12). The insertion device has a two-part housing (la, lb) and retention means, with which the infusion set (12) can be temporarily held on the device, and drive means (8, 9) with a pretensionable spring (8) for providing the drive energy for the insertion movement of the infusion set (12). To allow the infusion set (12) to be engaged in the retention means, the two housing parts (1a, 1b) can be pivoted from one another. After engagement of the infusion set (12), they can be pivoted back together again, as a result of which the spring (8) is pretensioned and the insertion device is brought to a state ready for application. The device is designed in such a way that immediately after the insertion movement has been triggered the infusion set (12) is separated from the retention means, such that it can execute the greatest part of the insertion movement free of the retention means. The invention permits the provision of insertion devices for insertion heads (12) which prevent irritation of the puncture site upon release of the head (12) from the device, and which at the same time are much easier to handle than the insertion devices of this type known today.
