Apparatus for inspection of a cutting tool by an examination device is provided. The examination tool is preferably a camera. The apparatus includes a base and a cutting tool mounting member on the base for attachment of a cutting tool to be inspected. The mounting member is adapted to position the cutting tool at a viewing location for the camera. There is a movable arm having a mounting location for receiving the camera. The movable arm is mounted to the base for rotation such that the camera moves in a first plane that includes the viewing location. The movable arm is also pivotable away from first plane to a second plane. An aperture through the base permits observation of the viewing location by the camera when the arm is pivoted to the second plane. The apparatus of the present invention permits fast, accurate and consistent measurement of the cutting surface geometry of a cutting tool. Preferably, the mounting location for the camera is movable along the arm and includes a positioning system to automatically adjust the position of the mounting location when the arm is pivoted from the first plane to the second plane to maintain the focus of the camera. By maintaining the focus of the camera between the first and second planes, the apparatus of the present invention permits rapid and accurate inspection of a cutting tool surface using software controlled inspection systems.
Appareil servant à l'inspection d'un outil de coupe grâce à un dispositif d'examen. L'outil d'examen est de préférence une caméra. L'appareil comprend une base et un élément de montage de l'outil de coupe sur la base en vue de la fixation de l'outil de coupe à inspecter. L'élément de montage est conçu pour placer l'outil de coupe à un emplacement d'examen convenant à la caméra. Il comporte un bras mobile possédant un emplacement de montrage destiné à recevoir la caméra. Le bras mobile est fixé à la base pour sa rotation de sorte que la caméra se déplace dans un premier plan qui inclut l'emplacement d'examen. Le bras mobile peut aussi pivoter à partir du premier plan vers un deuxième. Une ouverture dans la base rend possible l'observation de l'emplacement d'examen par la caméra lorsque le bras pivote vers le deuxième plan. L'appareil de la présente invention permet d'effectuer une mesure rapide, précise et constante de la géométrie de la surface de coupe d'un outil. De préférence, l'emplacement de montage de la caméra est mobile le long du bras et comprend un système de mise en position afin de régler automatiquement la position de l'emplacement de montage lorsque le bras pivote du premier plan vers le deuxième en vue de conserver la mise au point de la caméra. En conservant la mise au point de la caméra entre le premier plan et le deuxième, l'appareil de la présente invention permet d'effectuer une inspection rapide et précise de la surface de l'outil de coupe au moyen de systèmes d'inspection commandés par des programmes.
