A system and method for prompting a driver of a vehicle to conduct a visible inspection of the conditions at the rear of the vehicle before the vehicle is shifted into the reverse mode. An alarm which is armed when the vehicle ignition is turned on, and tripped by shifting the vehicle transmission into the reverse mode unless the driver first walks to the back of the vehicle and depresses a button located at or adjacent to the rear of the vehicle in order to disarm the alarm. In the preferred embodiment the alarm automatically disarms after a pre set interval following shifting into one of the forward drive gears.
