ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An object (12) is inspected to detect localised features (18) by scanning a sensor (20, 22) over the object to measure a property which will vary in the presence of such a feature. The sensor is simultaneously oscillated so that if such a feature is present the sensor crosses over it repeatedly, and output signals from the sensor (20) are analysed to detect an alternating signal component of frequency correlated with that of the oscillation indicating the presence of the feature. Helical springs (18) adjacent to a tubular structure (12) which extends through a region in which there is a gamma flux are detected using a gamma sensor in the bore. The sensor (20) is surrounded by shielding (22) in which is an aperture (24), and the shielding (22) is rotated while being scanned along the bore. 14742 MdWf
