An apparatus (10) and method for treating mixed and obstructive sleep apnea by increasing nasal air pressure delivered to the patient just prior to inhalation and by subsequently decreasing the pressure to ease exhalation effortby sensing, tracking, storing, and comparing breathing parameters such as flow, pressure, and sounds against pre-determined values of these parameters and controlling delivered gas pressures thereby. Gas is delivered to the patientby means of a nasal air pillow. An alternate embodiment stimulates breathing by means of a pair of electrodes which electrically stimulate the upper airway muscles. An apparatus for the detection and compensation of leaks and/or pressure drops is also disclosed.

Un appareillage (10) et une méthode pour traiter l'apnée du sommeil mixte et obstructive en augmentant la pression d'air nasale fournie au patient tout juste avant l'inspiration et en diminuant par la suite la pression pour faciliter l'effort d'expiration en captant, suivant, stockant et comparant les paramètres de la respiration comme l'écoulement, la pression et les bruits par rapport aux valeurs prédéterminées de ces paramètres et en contrôlant ainsi les pressions du gaz fourni. Le gaz est fourni au patient au moyen d'un coussin d'air nasal. Une autre méthode stimule la respiration au moyen d'une paire d'électrodes qui stimulent électriquement les muscles des voies aériennes supérieures. Un appareillage pour la détection et la compensation des fuites et/ou des chutes de pression est également présenté.
