A needle and catheter system, including components, is provided such that the position of an epidural needle may be identified after insertion into the body of a patient by electrically stimulating and thus locating a specific nerve. When the nerve is located, the catheter is inserted through the needle to a point slightly beyond the distal tip of the needle. The catheter tip may then be manipulated and the optimal position for the catheter tip determined by applying an electrical voltage through the helical wire to the proximal tip of the helical wire, this electrical stimulation being utilized in locating the specific location of the catheter tip within the nerve. Once optimum placement is achieved, the catheter is utilized for continuous administration of anaesthetic. A catheter adapter (74) is utilized to allow easy access to the catheter and introduction of fluid into the nerve of the patient through the catheter tip. The catheter and catheter adapter (74) are also provided with components so that the catheter adapter (74) can be in place during electrical stimulation of the target nerve.
L'invention concerne un système composé d'une aiguille et d'un cathéter, ainsi que de composantes, permettant de déterminer la position d'une aiguille épidurale après qu'elle a été introduite dans un patient selon un procédé consistant à stimuler électriquement et ainsi à déterminer l'emplacement d'un nerf précis. Lorsque l'emplacement de ce nerf est déterminé, le cathéter est introduit à travers l'aiguille vers un point situé juste après l'extrémité distale de l'aiguille. L'extrémité du cathéter peut alors être manipulée et la position optimale de l'extrémité du cathéter peut être déterminée par application d'une tension à travers un câble hélicoïdal à son extrémité proximale, cette stimulation électrique étant utilisée pour déterminer l'emplacement spécifique de l'extrémité du cathéter dans le nerf. Un fois cette étape réalisée, le cathéter est utilisé pour administrer de façon continue un anesthésique. Un adaptateur pour cathéter est utilisé pour permettre d'accéder facilement au cathéter et d'introduire un fluide dans le nerf du patient par l'intermédiaire de l'extrémité du cathéter. Ce cathéter et son adaptateur comprennent également des composantes grâce auxquelles l'adaptateur peut être en place lors de la stimulation électrique du nerf cible.
