ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A measuring instrument of the type providing a numerical indication by display of illuminated indicia formed by horizontal and vertical bar, strip, or dot group segments, is provided with a circuit for temporarily passivating certain segments and to use the horizontal segments for non-numeric coded information display. Balances used for weighing to a desired quanity can advantageously display, for example, a horizontal segment in a lower position of an indicia area to represent under weight, and can display an upper segment to form a quickly perceived indication of over weight, the centered horizontal segment being displayed at the target weight.
