A manual instrument enables the user to deposit a funerary urn on the bottom of a hole dug into the soil. It comprises an elongate member having an upper end provided with a handle. A plate is hingedly mounted, about a first axis, on the lower end of the elongate member between an horizontal position in which the urn can be placed on the top surface of the plate and a generally vertical position in which the urn is released. A rod has an upper end close to the handle of the elongate member and a lower end pivotally connected, about a second axis spaced apart from the first axis, to the free end of an arm secured to the plate. To pivot the plate from the horizontal to the vertical position, the user has only to pull the upper end of the rod upwardly. In operation, the plate is moved to the horizontal position, the urn is placed on the top surface of the plate, the elongate member is manipulated through the handle to displace the urn to the bottom of the hole, and the upper end of the rod is pulled upwardly to pivot the plate from the horizontal to the vertical position in order to release the urn and deposit it on the hole's bottom.
