An automobile instrument panel with a flexible steering column closeout and a method for assembling the same. The instrument panel is comprised of structural backing member (14) with a cavity (12) formed therethrough for receiving a steering column (26). A flexible backing member (16) is disposed over the cavity and attached to the structural backing. A layer of foam (24) is then used to cover both the structural backing and the flexible backing. The foam layer retains the flexible backing against the structural backing, while creating a more aesthetic look for the instrument panel. An opening to accommodate the steering column is cut through both the foam layer and the flexible backing in an area located over the cavity portion of the structural backing, thereby forming instrument panel while still allowing for unimpeded displacement of the column relative to the instrument panel.
L'invention concerne un tableau de bord d'un véhicule automobile présentant un carter renfermant la colonne de direction flexible et un procédé d'assemblage de celui-ci. Le tableau de bord comprend un élément (14) de support de structure présentant une cavité (12) formée dans ledit élément et permettant de loger une colonne de direction (26). Un élément de support flexible (16) est disposé au-dessus de la cavité et est fixé au support de structure. Une couche de mousse (24) est alors utilisée pour couvrir le support de structure et le support flexible. La couche de mousse retient le support flexible contre le support de structure, tout en créant une présentation plus esthétique du tableau de bord. Une ouverture destinée à loger la colonne de direction est coupée à travers la couche de mousse et le support flexible dans une zone située au-dessus de la partie de cavité du support de structure, formant ainsi un tableau de bord tout en permettant le déplacement sans entraves de la colonne par rapport au tableau de bord.
