This invention is an instrumentation for preparing a femur for a prosthesis, the femur including a femoral canal (10) defined by sidewalls, and the instrumentation including at least one initial compactor instrument (14) having a proximal portion (16), and a distal broach portion (18), the broach portion (18) being adapted to conform substantially to a proximal end of the femoral canal (10) so as to compact bone in the sidewalls thereof; a second type of compactor instrument (30) having a proximal portion (32) and a distal broach portion (34), the secondary compactor instrument (30) portion being constructed and arranged to conform substantially to the shape of the prosthesis so as to further compact bone in the sidewalls of the proximal end of the femoral canal (10); and a final type of compactor instrument (50) having a proximal portion (52) and an elongated distal broach portion (54), the elongated broach portion (54) being adapted to extend into the femoral canal (10) and compact bone at a location distal to previously compacted sidewalls.
Instruments permettant de préparer un fémur pour la pose d'une prothèse, le fémur étant constitué d'un canal fémoral (10) défini par des parois latérales. Les instruments comprennent au moins un instrument de compactage initial (14) présentant une extrémité proximale (16) et une extrémité distale (18). L'extrémité distale (18) est conçue pour épouser sensiblement les contours de l'extrémité supérieure du canal fémoral (10), de manière à compacter l'os entre les parois latérales. Un instrument compacteur du deuxième type (30) présentant une extrémité proximale (32) et une extrémité distale (34) est conçu de manière à épouser sensiblement les contours de la prothèse de manière à compacter davantage l'os entre les parois latérales de l'extrémité supérieure du canal fémoral (10). L'instrument de compactage du troisième type (50) présente une extrémité proximale (52) et une extrémité distale de forme allongée (54), laquelle est conçue pour s'introduire à l'intérieur du canal fémoral (10) et compacter l'os en un site et relativement éloigné des parois qui ont été compactées précédemment.
