ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Longitudinally-positioned sheets of corrugated steel (1) are joined at right- angles to latitudinally-positioned sheets of corrugated steel (2) using rivets or screws (3) thus creating a grillage-like structure. The cavities between the corrugations are filled with heat-insulating material (4) such as polystyre or peat. In road and airport construction the grillage structure will then be covered by a layer of stabilised or non-stabilised crushed aggregate or chips (5) and a further surface layer of asphalt or concrete pavement. In railroad construction rails may be fixed directly to the top layer of corrugated steel. Filling with polystyrene will permit the grillage structure to be used directly on lakes and swamps as a foundation for floating airstrips either for civil light aircraft or emergency military use, or for constructing pontoon bridges. Polystyrene-filled grillage can also be adapted, by means of a suitably designe bows, stern and sides together with the addition of an outboard motor, for emergency use as a ferry. Polystyrene-filled grillage can also be used to build pontoon jetties.
