A brace for resisting the repulsion forces generated between the bar bars in multiphase switchgear by short circuit currents has an electrically insulative cross- member bolted directly to the bus bars and a plurality of longitudinally spaced electrically insulative fins extending laterally from the cross-member between adjacent bus bars a distance sufficient that the over surface distance between the bus bars over the cross-member and surfaces of the fins is at least a predetermined prescribed value. In a support brace version, the cross-member is an angle or other structural shape which is extended at each end for attachment to a support within the switchgear and additional fins are placed between the attachments and the outer bus bars to provide similar over surface distance between the bus bars and the support. The fins can be molded integrally with the cross-member or fabricated from sheet material and secured to the cross-member by an adhesive effecting an air tight seal.
