ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cylinder head for an internal combustion engine includes a primary intake passage for supplying an air-fuel mixture into a combustion chamber in a full range of load conditions and a secondary intake passage for supplying an air-fuel mixture into the combustion chamber under relatively high load conditions. The primary intake passage has an out- let end opening into the secondary intake passage upstream of and adjacent to a valve seat for an intake valve having a stem extending partly through the secondary intake passage. The primary intake passage and the outlet end thereof are smaller in cross section than the secondary intake passage and an out let end thereof, respectively, which opens into the combustion chamber. The outlet end of the primary intake passage is oriented toward the stem of the intake valve so that the air- fuel mixture supplied from the primary intake passage will impinge upon and be disturbed by the valve stem when entering the combustion chamber. The outlet end of the primary intake passage has a central axis extending either in or out of align- ment with a longitudinal axis of the valve stem. The outlet end of the primary intake passage is defined by a nose pro- jecting into the secondary intake passage toward the valve stem for directing the air-fuel mixture to the latter. -- 10 --
