To provide an intake system for horizontal opposed type internal combustion engine which can contribute to improvement of output performance without sacrificing the intrinsic merit of the horizontal opposed type internal combustion engine, namely, smaller overall height. First and second intake ports 9Lf, 9Lr and 9Rf, 9Rr provided at head portions of first and second banks 7L, 7R arranged on the left and right sides and first and second intake distribution ports 12La, 12Lb and 12Ra, 12Rb arranged horizontally at a front wall of an intake surge tank 10 disposed on the rear end side of and adjacent to a crank shaft 1 are respectively connected with each other through first and second intake pipes 13Lf, 13Lr and 13Lf, 13Rr disposed along a top surface or bottom surface of the engine E. Throttle valves 14La, 14Lb and 14Ra, 14Rb for controlling intake quantities in the first and second intake pipes are provided in upstream portions of the intake pipes.
