An integrated circuit card (10) including one or more integrated circuit elements (12) interacts with a lever (82) extending into a card-re- ceiving receptacle (70) in electronic apparatus for verifying correct in- sertion and opening a sliding shutter (38) in the card (10). The integrat- ed circuit elements (12) are enclosed in a case (20, 30, 32) having an opening for exposing a contact pattern (18) that connects the integrated circuit elements (12) to the electronic apparatus. The shutter (38) is bi- ased toward a closed position in which a forward surface (38a) covers the contact area (18). An inclined chamfer (33) on a forward section of the case (20, 30, 32) interacts with the lever (82) to limit insertion to only one orientation of the case (10). By providing a tab (40) on the rear of the shutter that extends from the case (10) on the same side as the cham- fer (33), the lever (82) initially verifies correct insertion and subsequent- ly engages the tab (40) to drive the shutter (38) to an open position ex- posing the contact pattern (18) to the electronic apparatus.
