2042377 9105304 PCTABS00004 A computer system employs an integrated keyboard and pointing device (FIG. 9) to allow user input of alpha-numeric (typing) information (94, FIG. 12), pointing direction information (174, FIG. 12) and pointing event information (178, FIG. 12) without moving the user's hands from the usual typing position on the keyboard. The new system has typing and pointing modes of operation (FIG. 10). In the pointing mode, preassigned keyswitches are used to input pointing events, cursor speed changes, and other modifications to the system's operation (182, FIG. 12). All such modifications are transparent to the operating system and application software because they are processed at keyboard interrupt level (162, FIG. 11).
