ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: This invention is concerned with an improved process for the production of chlorine dioxide and, if desired, chlorine from hydrogen chloride and electrolytically produced alkali metal chlorate, wherein the resulting residual solution is recycled to the electrolytic process by which new chlorate is produced and wherein at least a part of hydrogen chloride which is equivalent of the chlorine dioxide product is produced in burning chlorine gas produced by an electrolysis of alkali chloride with hydrogen, characterized in that the cycle comprising the decomposition of chlorate and the electrolytic production of chlorate is combined with an electrolysis of alkali metal chloride in a membrane cell, and that the sodium chlorate which becomes available as a by-product of the electrolysis in said membrane cell, or the decomposition product of said sodium chlorate is fed to the cycle comprising the decomposition of chlorate and the electrolytic production of chlorate.
