An evaporative air cooler evaporates water in multistages by passing air across a series of spaced parallel wetted wicks (11) which repeatedly interrupt air flow. This enhances both evaporation and heat transfer rates. Wetting of the wicks (11) is achieved at their ends (22), and the wicks are either sloping or horizontal, not vertical, so that passage of water along the wicks is not impeded by gravity.

Un refroidisseur d'air par évaporation fait s'évaporer de l'eau lors d'étapes successives en faisant passer de l'air sur une série de mèches humidifiées, parallèles et espacées, qui s'opposent répétitivement au flux d'air, ce qui améliore tant le taux d'évaporation que celui du transfert de chaleur. L'humidification des mèches (11) intervient par leurs extrémités (22) et elles sont inclinées ou horizontales mais pas verticales, de façon que l'écoulement de l'eau tout au long de ces mèches ne soit pas entravé par la gravité.
