Disclosed are a method and a system for transmitting a message or data packet from a single sender to a plurality, i.e. a group of receivers, usually called multicasting, within a conventional unicast transmission network, i.e. a network basically not equipped to handle such multicast transmissions, consisting of a plurality of subnetworks. The nodes or gateways connecting the subnetworks maintain tables of multicast receiving stations (or groups of such) and the header of each message includes information defining the groups of the addressed multicast receiving stations.

Cette invention a trait à une méthode pour transmettre un message ou un ensemble de données d'un seul expéditeur à plusieurs destinataires, c.-à-d. à un groupe de destinataires, opération communément appelée multi-diffusion, dans un réseau de transmission à diffusion unique, c.-à-d. un réseau qui n'est pas équipé pour effectuer de telles transmissions à diffusion multiple, composé de plusieurs sous-réseaux. Les noeuds ou passerelles qui relient les sous-réseaux maintiennent des tableaux des stations (ou groupes de stations) de réception de multi-diffusion et l'en-tête de chaque message contient des renseignements définissant les groupes des stations de réception de multi-diffusion.
