One exemplary embodiment is directed to an inter-networking device that performs at least one inter-networking function using physical layer information about the network of which the device is a part. Another exemplary embodiment is di-rected to capturing physical layer information about physical communication media that is attached to an inter-networking device. Another exemplary embodiment is directed to a technique for generating a spanning tree and/or forwarding database information for a plurality of switches in a network at a central location. The spanning tree and/or forwarding database information is generat-ed at the central location using information including physical layer information about devices and physical communication media in the network. Another exemplary embodiment is directed to an ETHERNET physical layer device having integrated support for capturing physical layer information about the physical communication media connected to the ETHERNET physical layer device.
Un mode de réalisation représentatif de la présente invention concerne un dispositif d'interconnexion de réseaux qui assure au moins une fonction d'interconnexion de réseaux au moyen d'informations de couche physique relative au réseau auquel appartient le dispositif. Un autre mode de réalisation représentatif de l'invention concerne la capture d'informations de couche physique concernant le support de communication physique qui est attaché à un dispositif d'interconnexion de réseaux. Un autre mode de réalisation de l'invention concerne une technique de génération d'un arbre maximal et/ou d'informations de base de données de renvoi pour une pluralité de commutateurs dans un réseau au niveau d'un emplacement central. L'arbre maximal et/ou les informations de base de données de renvoi est/sont générés au niveau de l'emplacement central au moyen d'informations incluant des informations de couche physique concernant des dispositifs et des supports de communication physiques dans le réseau. Un autre mode de réalisation représentatif concerne un dispositif de couche physique ÉTHERNET ayant un support intégré pour capturer des informations de couche physique concernant les supports de communication physiques reliés au dispositif de couche physique ÉTHERNET.
