An interactive business data visualization system allows the user to combine data from more than one data source and present the data in the form of a graphical, multi-metric data visualization. In a preferred embodiment, the system prompts the user to select data sources and certain features of the presentation layout and generates in response to the user input a number of candidate data visualizations. These candidate visualizations are then numerically evaluated for their visualizing quality by a scoring algorithm and presented to the user for final selection in a ranked order based on the results of this evaluation. The system provides the user with a large variety of two- and three- dimensional visualization tools, including scorecards for visualizing business performance indicators and maps for visualizing geographically distributed data. Any number of such tools can be combined into a fully customized visualization. The data to be visualized can be filtered and the visualization drilled down for details. The data can also be presented in a series of consecutive visualizations, to create an animation effect. For rendering of screen graphics, the system uses a preemptive rendering algorithm to avoid being slowed down when handling screen repaint requests received from the operating system.
