A pen-based calculator, wherein the user is presented with a screen and a gesture based input device by means of which a sum can be "handwritten" and displayed on the screen. The visibility on the screen of the system's status is provided through two types of feedback: annotation and morphing. As the user is writing the expression, the system can process in the background and, as a symbol is recognised, the user is made aware of this recognition by visual feedback: a typeset character stretched to the stroke's hull replaces the written strokes. Morphing formats the entered expression into a correctly typeset equation by moving the symbols as little as possible from the user's writing, and the morph provides the continuity between the user's input and the typeset equation that allows them to continue to edit and use it. Finally, the answer may be displayed at the correct location relative to the equation.
L'invention concerne une calculatrice basée sur un stylo. L'utilisateur voit un écran et un dispositif de saisie basé sur les gestes. Grâce à ce système, l'utilisateur peut écrire des chiffres à la main et la somme est affichée à l'écran. La visibilité du statut du système à l'écran est apportée de deux manières : par annotation et par morphing. Au moment où l'utilisateur écrit l'expression, le système est capable de traiter la saisie en arrière-plan et, lorsqu'il reconnaît un symbole, l'utilisateur est averti de cette reconnaissance par un signal visuel. Un caractère mis en forme, étiré jusqu'au trait, remplace les traits écrits. Le morphing met en forme l'expression saisie en une équation correcte en déplaçant les symboles aussi peu que possible par rapport à l'écriture de l'utilisateur. Le morphing assure la continuité entre la saisie de l'utilisateur et l'équation mise en forme, ce qui lui permet de continuer à la modifier et à l'utiliser. Enfin, la réponse peut être affichée à l'emplacement correct par rapport à l'équation.
