ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A system is provided for interactively and selectively communicating particular multimedia presentations to each of a plurality of subscribers along a CATV cable network. Each of the multimedia presentations generally includes a sequence of video images, accompanying audio, and a menu of choices that are displayed on the subscriber's television set. In response to viewing a particular presentation, the subscriber may choose to perform transactions related to the presentation or to select another presentation for viewing on his television set. The subscriber communicates his selections by entering codes on his Touch-Tone telephone keypad. His input signals are transmitted to a local operating center which is capable of preparing, storing and processing digital data related to the multimedia presentations and which can perform transactions related thereto. In response to the subscriber's inputs, the local operating center transmits the digital data representing the selected presentations along a CATV cable network to a plurality of presentation players. Each of the presentation players is connected to a group of subscribers, and includes means capable of receiving, storing and processing digital data that is destined for one of the subscribers to which it is connected, and further includes means for converting the digital data into analog TV signals and for transmitting the analog TV signals to the television set of the subscriber who has requested that particular presentation. Upon receipt of the presentation, the subscriber may again enter codes displayed in menu form on his television set to either select another particular presentation for viewing or perform transactions. The system disclosed may be structured to provide the environment of an electronic mall, wherein the presentations relate to particular products and services and wherein the subscribers may interactively perform individualized shopping sessions, in which they can shop for and purchase particular products and services which they select.
