The present invention relates to a method of providing an interactive program to a television user comprised of transmitting a television program, and transmitting variables relating to possible television program choices, storing the variables at a user location, displaying the television program, and modifying the variables from the user location during the progress of the television program, to change the progress of the television program, whereby program choice variations under control of a user location based on variables modified at the user location rather than modified from a head end are obtained.
