An interactive voice response system for use in client-server architecture provides a interactive voice response shell or manager which includes a module for reading Request Forms prepared in Text or ASCII and transmitted by an IVR client to the shell and extracting commands and data therefrom and transmitting the data to the caller in the manner prescribed by the form; a module for converting text files to speech and transmitting speech signals to the caller; a module for converting pre-recorded voice clips stored in memory to sounds and transmitting the sounds to the caller; a module for faxing files to the caller user and a module for decoding input entered by the caller on a telephone keypad and transmitting appropriate requests and data to the client.
