The composition has the formula AqMOXO4.nH2O where A is a monovalent, divalent or polyvalent cation, MOXO4 is a layered mixed oxide selected from the group consisting of VOPO4, VOS04, VOAsO4, VOMoO4, NbOPO4, NbOAsO4, TaOPO4 and MoOPO4, n is a number from O to 4 and q is a number from about 0.001 to about 1Ø
