ABSTRACT An interference detection circuit operable to switch a channel to another frequency when interference is detected is described. The invention is based on the known fact that, when two carrier waves allotted the same frequency cause interference, a beat signal is obtained. This beat signal can be amplitude detected but care must be taken to ensure that the amplitude fluctuation measured is due to interference and not due simply to the non- linearity of the transmission system which introduces amplitude modulation during conversation. The invention, therefore, involves measuring the ampli- tude fluctuation resulting when the carrier wave is not being modulated to give a true indication of interference when the fluctuation exceeds a predeter- mined value. A discriminator in the form of a voice level detector is used to operate a gate when there is no voice signal. The gate can be placed at the end of the circuit, i.e., after the amplitude fluctuation level has been obtained, or it can be placed before the amplitude fluctuation circuit in which case it operates as an analog gate permitting passage of the beat signal only when there is no voice signal.
