An interior trim part for a vehicle includes a reinforcement material made of a relatively soft thermoplastic elastomer material that is bonded to an outer surface of a relatively hard substrate material. In an alternate embodiment, the reinforcement material is partially embedded into the substrate material. In another alternate embodiment, the reinforcement material forms a portion of an outer surface that is visible to the occupants of the vehicle. The interior trim part may also include a skin material and a foam layer disposed between the skin material and the substrate material. In the event the interior trim part is used as a cover for an air bag, the reinforcement material may be applied entirely within the tear seam or extend beyond the tear seam to prevent fragmentation of the interior trim part when the air bag is deployed.
