The present invention is directed to a substantially pure, approximately 52 kD protein that inhibits the activity of IL-1. The invention also provides a continuous cell line that produces the protein, and methods for its purification. The invention is also directed towards the use of the inhibitory protein, both in vitro and in vivo, in reducing the proliferation of leukocytes and inflammation as well as uses in immuno-suppression and the treatment of cancer.
