ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An interlocking molecular model system includes a component that represents an atom and has an elongated shank extending outwardly. The outermost part of the shank has a larger diameter than the portion of the shank immediately adja- cent it on the side toward the location representing the center of the atom, and the differences in diameter form a shoulder to be grasped by a hollow tubular fastener component slotted at one end so that it can slip over the enlarged outermost part of the shank and fit behind the shoulder. The combined length of the shank and the fastener component represents the covalent radius of that atom, and the shank has an abutment that limits the extent to which the fastener component can be pushed toward the part of the atom representing the nucleus, thereby maintain- ing the proper representation of molecular distances in the model The fastener component can have a flange to be joined to a generally similar fastener component to engage another shank on another component representative of an atom. Another component has a hollow tubular portion to fit over the shank of the first component and has a generally spherical end facing away from its hollow tubular portion so as to give an appearance somewhat similar to a space-filling model. The fastener components and shanks can be keyed to set angular relationships in a complex model built of the components.
