ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A building element or toy building element is disclosed. The hollow building element is of rectangular parallelopiped con- figuration and has side and end walls and one open face and one closed face having interior and exterior surfaces and at least one cylindrical projection on the closed face exterior surface. At least one gripping member is provided within the hollow ele- ment and extends from the closed face interior surface substan- tially to the plane of the edges of the side and end walls at the open face, the gripping member having a circular arcuate surface with a radius equal to the radius of the cylindrical projection. The central axis of the circular arcuate surface is coaxial with the axis of the cylindrical projection, whereby when two compatible blocks are positioned together a cylindrical projection on one block is received and resiliently held between the circular arcu- ate surface and adjacent side walls. This interlocking arrange- ment maintains the block in snug interfitting relationship which can easily be separated as desired.
