ABSTRACT Novel intermediate compounds have the formula: Image wherein n is an integer of from 1 to 6 inclusive; wherein R1 is: a) hydrogen; b) alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, inclusive; c) trifluoromethyl; d) trichloromethyl; e) alkenyl; or f) alkynyl; wherein R2 is straight chain alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, inclusive. These intermediates are useful in the preparation of novel 3-oxa-15-desoxy-16-hydroxy-16-alkyl prostaglandins of the E series and the 5,6-acetylene derivatives thereof. The prostaglandins themselves are useful for their gastric anti- secretory, cytoprotective, antiulcer and antihypertensive activity.
