ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel compounds are provided, useful as interme- diates in the preparation of 4-hydroxy-5-alkyl-3-oxo-2H- furans and 4-hydroxy-2,5-dialkyl-3-oxo-2H-furans, and also useful as additives to enhance the richness of several types of flavour, the novel compounds have the general formula Image wherein R1 is 1 to 6 carbon alkyl, R3 is 1 to 4 carbon alkyl, R4 is 1 to 4 carbon alkyl, n is O or 1, Y is carbonyl oxygen when n is 1 or hydroxyl when n is O, and the dotted line represents a carbon single bond when n is 1 and a carbon to carbon double bond when n is O.
