ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device for charging a capacitor from an a.c. source via a transformer and rectifier by using at least one auxiliary capacitor for buffer-charging of the charging capa- citor. The charge of the capacitor may be used, for example, to supply a battery or flasing a light source. Change of the capacitance of the auxiliary capacitor makes it possible to regulate the charging characteristic of the capacitor when charging a battery and to regulate the flash characteristics, i.e., intensity and flash frequency, in the case where the charging capacitor is discharged through a flash lamp via a thyristor.
