ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An internal combustion engine having a cylinder with a reciprocable piston operable to compress air on its upstroke within the cylinder. The cylinder communicates via a passage with a main combustion chamber and a subsidiary combustion chamber communicates with a chamber via a passageway. A reciprocable valve is provided operable to selectively block communication between the two chambers. Fuel is injected into the subsidiary chamber during the compression stroke of the engine, the chambers then being in communication. Before top dead centre the valve is operated to block communication between the chambers with compression continuing thereafter in the main chamber. Around top dead centre additional fuel injection into the subsidiary chamber is begun, the air fuel mixture in the subsidiary chamber is then ignited and the valve opened to cause ignited fuel in the subsidiary chamber to pass-along a passageway to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the main chamber.
